Social networks can be a source of stress in which we end up not recognizing ourselves. Even more so for the celebrities who are constantly in the center of attention and who we like to learn about and debate behind our screens.
It can be particularly hard on morale and heavy to bear to be a Selena Gomez who has talked about the physique or a Chase Stokes who is criticized for quickly moving on after a breakup.
A break from web platforms, a detox, becomes a solution to consider to preserve your mental health.
Here are 14 celebrities who have unplugged from social media.
1. Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez is one of the celebrities who talks the most about mental health and the importance of taking care of it. Taking a break from social media is one of Selena’s solutions. She does not hesitate to stay away from screens.
Selena has already said in an interview that the networks were terrible for her generation. She deletes at least once a week the applications likely to make her enter a spiral. This practice allows him to avoid obsessing over negative comments about him, which can be very harsh and gratuitous.
2. Tom Holland
Tom took a few minutes to record a video in which he indicates that he is distancing himself from social networks. Spider-man will leave the Instagram platform, among other things, to preserve his sanity. Over 67.7 million people follow Tom on the networks, which is why before officially cutting ties with the platform, he allocated part of his video to help people struggling with mental health problems, mentioning useful resources.
What drives Tom to take an indefinite hiatus is his own reaction to all the comments about him. It drives him crazy! Like many, he obsesses over negative comments and it undermines his sanity.
3. Millie Bobby Brown
Still a teenager in 2018, Millie left the Twitter platform because homophobic memes were attached to her against her will. This episode was all the more difficult as she had to justify herself in real life in addition to virtual life. It was grueling for the actress.
Millie once said “Social media is one of the best places in the world and also the worst, it contradicts itself. You can see incredible messages there, it raises awareness of situations, but it can also be heartbreaking to see what is happening online, especially bullying.
4. Joe Keery
Millie’s Stranger Things colleague Bobby Brown deleted all traces of his Instagram presence last May and hasn’t been active on Twitter for quite a while. Is it a publicity sleight of hand or a need to take care of one’s mental health? The canvas is carried away by the various possible reasons for his absence.
No one really knows yet why Joe is no longer present on social networks at the moment, but it has sparked a heated discussion on Reddit.
5. Chase Stokes
Social media breaks are nothing new for the Outer Banks actor . Chase often takes time away from his phone as he struggles with comments from fans that are a bit too serious and disrespectful.
A situation illustrating the point well is following the breakup of Chase with his co-star Madelyn Cline. Several subscribers who were quick to jump to conclusions hammered harsh comments at Chase when he posted a photo with his sister.
6. Lili Reinhart
Lili Reinhart‘s hiatus was taken in 2018. She temporarily ended her Twitter presence, stating, “Do people on Twitter ever get tired of being so negative and disrespectful of literally everything and everyone? Are they that miserable?”
She took a step back, while having to explain on Instagram that being a famous person, she receives messages from hundreds of people who pour their hatred on celebrities. “Twitter is not good for my mental health and I no longer benefit from it. That’s WHY I’m taking a break.” She found it hard to see that she had to justify this choice to her audience, but she did so to set the record straight.
7. Camilla Hair
Camila hasn’t had Twitter for at least three years. The singer posts photos on Instagram, but does not consult the platform or other social networks that could undermine her mental health. She does this to protect herself from the negative aspects of social networks, often harsh about Camila’s physique.
She said in an interview “I do it to protect my energy. I intensely want to live my best life and be the best artist I can be. I can’t do that if I care what people think. I can’t do that if I’m constantly trying to please.”
8. Ed Sheeran
The singer has a fairly distant relationship with social networks. Sure, he uses Instagram and company to promote his career, but he’s not the most active on a day-to-day basis. Luckily for the public, Ed makes publications from time to time to say that an album is coming or that his family is growing.
However, he took a sabbatical from social media in 2015. He explained the break. “I’ve had a hell of a journey over the past 5 years, but I feel like I’m seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes, so I’m taking this opportunity to not have to be anywhere or to have something to do in the world to see everything I’ve been missing.”
9. Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande has experienced heartbreak, publicized grief and live tragedy that fans will remember for a long time. These events made him take time away from the screens in order to avoid seeing more news related to all this.
She particularly decided to disconnect during her breakup with Pete Davidson since she regularly came across mentions of the situation as she tried to move on.
10. Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato has a sensitive soul and has never hesitated to demonstrate it since she became famous. She took a break from social media while her manager, Scooter Braun, was in court against Taylors Swift for the purchase of song rights. The murderous comments prompted her to erase herself from web platforms by simply stating on Instagram “I’m taking a break, be nice”.
She also tends, like the majority of artists, to focus particularly on the bad comments that are made about her. She goes away from the networks from time to time to take care of her head.
11. Elisabeth Olsen
Elisabeth Olsen does not use networks. She doesn’t even have an official Instagram account! She thinks of social networks as a way to control her own image.
“My image, in myself, is only there to disappear. I want people to voice only the work that I’m proud of. I have the impression that by going to Instagram or Twitter people let themselves be touched, and I don’t want to be constantly touched. I would never-never do that.”
12.Kristen Stewart
Kristen is not present on social networks either. The actress doesn’t like virtual conversations at all, which can end up being a conversation with oneself and a shadow, as Kristen mentioned in an interview in 2016.
“It’s a new language, it’s not invalid. However, it becomes an obsession with yourself and it validates something completely superficial about yourself. It definitely changed us.”
13. Hailey Bieber
Hailey deleted Twitter and took the time to explain why in a video posted on her Youtube channel in March 2021. “I don’t have Twitter anymore because there really isn’t a time when I have opened the app and I didn’t feel it was a toxic environment.”
She added “The very idea of opening the app causes anxiety and I feel like I’m going to vomit. I want everyone to like me and it’s hard every time I work on that thought. I’m starting to think to myself that it’s okay not to want to owe everyone an explanation or that I owe anything at all times. It’s okay to want to fix everything behind closed doors.”
14. Cole Sprouse
The Jughead singer took a break from social media in 2020 after a person on condition of anonymity alleged Cole engaged in sexual misconduct on Twitter.
A few months later, we found Cole on Instagram. He wrote, “I know I’ve been away from the networks for a while. I decided to take a much needed break for my mental health. I’ve never been the most active user, but even the amount of content I’ve engaged in during quarantine has been a little too demanding.”
