The “dynamic island” of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max already had the LG V10 seven years ago

One of the great novelties of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models has turned out to be not so new

Dynamic Island or “dynamic island” is the name that Apple has chosen for one of the main novelties that the higher models of the iPhone 14 have brought. The company wanted to give a new functionality to the notch , the black space on the screen under which the front camera and other sensors are hidden, changing their location. It’s moved it a few millimeters from the side to the center and made it part of a new notification center that offers limited functionality with some apps , without the need to launch them full screen. The idea, despite the fanfare that accompanies everything Apple does, is not new. LG already executed it a few years ago with the LG V102015, the year of the iPhone 6s. Far from the glamor with which Apple baptizes its novelties, LG’s was presented as a simple auxiliary screen , as the specialized medium Phandroid recalls.

As with LG’s approach, Apple’s approach has its pros and cons. Among the first, the design of the notifications that are displayed in Dynamic Island around the notch use a dark background to hide the part occupied by the camera and other sensors , so that there is nothing to break the iPhone screen. However, at times like video playback, the notch away from the side is like a smudge in the middle of the movie you’re watching .

LG was not so daring and reserved an entire band at one end of the LG V10 for the space occupied by the notch, independent of the main screen. Thus, to the main 5.7-inch screen with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, a secondary screen of 2.1 inches with a resolution of 1,040 x 160 pixels was added on top of the main one . With the notch at one end of the secondary and the rest of it showing information on a black background, the camera and sensor assembly was hidden, as is the case with Dynamic Island, and gave the impression of a screen that is all image , without any space reserved for other elements. In the case of the LG V10, its presence was less obtrusivethan the iPhone 14 Pro when watching a movie by not interfering with the image format, but its functionality is more developed in Apple mobiles .

In both phones, the notch is used as part of a hypervitaminized notification center . In the LG, you could control multimedia playback, access the last used applications, regular contacts, receive notifications, configure shortcuts, view the battery status, weather or calendar events, among other functions, through the auxiliary screen. On some occasions it was practical, but on other occasions it was redundant with what the Android notification bar itself offered.

In the iPhone 14 Pro, there is, above all, a better visual finish of the integration of the notch with the software , greater possibilities of interaction and it plays with the advantage of being an element present in all the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, which surely it will be extended in future generations to the entire range, so that developers will work on the same basis and will have to take advantage of its possibilities to offer the best user experience. LG, in a sea of Android phone makers, had it much harder .
